- Treatment of Intestinal Strongyloidiasis (Threadworm Infection):
- Intestinal Strongyloidiasis is caused by the parasitic roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis. Ivermectin is effective in eliminating the infection by killing the larvae and adult worms in the intestines. The typical dose for strongyloidiasis is based on the patient’s weight, and the 6mg tablet may be used for smaller patients or as part of a lower dosing regimen.
- Onchocerciasis (River Blindness):
- Ivermectin is used to treat onchocerciasis, a parasitic infection caused by the Onchocerca volvulus worm, which is transmitted by blackfly bites. The disease can cause severe itching, skin changes, and blindness. Ivermectin helps reduce the number of microfilariae (larvae) and prevent further complications. The dosage is typically given once every 6–12 months, depending on the patient’s condition.
- Lice and Scabies:
- Lice: Ivermectin is sometimes prescribed for head lice infestations, particularly when topical treatments are not effective. The 6mg tablet may be used as part of the treatment regimen.
- Scabies: Ivermectin is also used to treat scabies, a skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is effective in killing the mites and their eggs. A single dose is usually effective, with a repeat dose after one or two weeks if necessary.
- Filariasis:
- Filariasis, caused by parasitic worms like Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi, can lead to lymphatic problems and severe swelling (elephantiasis). Ivermectin is used as part of the treatment for lymphatic filariasis. The medication helps to reduce the number of microfilariae in the bloodstream.
